Meet The Multi-Ethnics: Great Profiles Of Mixed Race Celebrities - Biracial Women Actors, Singers And Models
“WE'RE SEEING MORE of a desire for the exotic, left-of-centre beauty that transcends race or class,” says Amy Barnett, managing director of People magazine. America's multi-racial and multi-ethnic population is their fastest-growing demographic. In the 2000 census approximately seven million citizens — 2.4 per cent of the population — identified themselves as being of more than one ethnic origin or racial group.
Simultaneously, one in seven U.S. marriages in 2008 and 2009 was between men and women of different races or ethnic backgrounds, according to new data from the Pew Research Center. Meanwhile, in 2012, according to the Census Bureau, just under half of all children under five born in America were non-white. At the current rate, experts predict that by 2045 whites will no longer be the country's majority population.
MIXED RACE CELEBRITIES
What effect will these changes have on racial identification and beauty? Far from getting simpler, classifications are becoming more complex and kaleidoscopic in nature. With terms such as 'biracial', 'mixed race' or 'light-skinned' — as opposed to the more binary descriptives, 'black' or 'white' — rapidly becoming more numerous, those who self-determine in this way are increasing looking to celebrities of colour — actors, actors, singers and models with similar racial and ethnic backgrounds to theirs — to help define their notions of identity. Beyoncé, Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Rihanna, Jennifer Beals, Rosario Dawson, Zoë Saldaña and Tiger Woods are just a few of the women celebrities of biracial or mixed race heritage that represent this diverse rainbow. You can read their profiles opposite, plus those of many others, in Ben Arogundade's best-selling book Black Beauty.
